A wonderful antique agate pebble brooch from the Victorian era, c1880! Made of sterling silver the circular Order of Garter brooch features Montrose agate segments surrounding the Prince of Wales feather motif. The three - dimensional and beautifully textured British heraldic design consists of three ostrich feathers emerging from a coronet and a ribbon below bearing the motto 'Ich dien' (translates to 'I serve'). Various shapes of Montrose agate decorate the border, the agate shapes include triangular, thistle and shamrock. The striking banded blue-gray colored agate stones originate from Scotland's renowned Montrose agate-bearing coastline in the 19th century. Hence the name of this particular stone that is so unique to this form of agate! The surface surrounding the agate stones is entirely adorned with ornate hand engraving, adding further texture and charm to this wonderful Victorian piece. A pin and c-loop attach to the back, along with a loop and ring if you wish to wear the piece as a pendant.
A beautiful and one of a kind antique piece which combines British elements along with Scottish origins wrapped up in one. Stunning as a brooch or pendant, night or day!
