A fabulous antique Montrose agate brooch, hailing from Scotland from the late 19th century, c1877! Also known as Scottish pebble jewelry, the circular design brooch is crafted in sterling silver. The striking banded blue-gray colored agate stones originate from Scotland's renowned Montrose agate-bearing coastline in the 19th century. Hence the name of this particular agate that is so unique to this form of agate! The striking design features overlaid domed 'marquise' and 'tusk' shaped Montrose agate segments which are forming the border in an overlapped like design. A dome centre with four inlaid Montrose agate segments and engraved silver stripsĀ in the form of the Scottish Saltire adorns the dome. Four little granules are interspaced at each interval, adding further detail to this wonderful Scottish brooch! Furthermore, the silver surface surrounding the Montrose agate segments are entirely adorned with hand engraved patterns. A pin and c-loop attach to the back. The brooch measures 3.40 across.

The brooch bears the unique lozenge shaped registration mark to the back - dating the piece to year 1877. The distinctive mark was used in Britain between 1842 to 1883 and was utilized to show that the design was registered, and to give a precise date of the manufacture.

A superb piece of Scottish history which would add an impressive accessory to the scarf, lapel or wherever you desire to show it off.
