A beautiful marcasite 'bird in flight' brooch from the late Art Deco period, c1930's! The brooch is made of sterling silver and features hand-set marcasite gems. The detailed and elongated bird figure has a 3-dimensional appearance and the attention to detail is evident. The outspread deco wings and body is encrusted with sparkling marcasite gems and the neck, beak and eye are engraved giving a real-life look. There is milgrain detail adding Art Deco pizzazz! A pin and revolver clasp on the reverse makes up the rest of the brooch, additionally there is a safety chain/pin attached to a ring giving extra security whilst wearing. A beautiful patina remains on the brooch adding further depth of character.
Stamped to the back of the brooch is "STERLING" and "GERMANY". Many marcasite pieces were produced in Germany before WW2 for export, and this piece is one of them!
A wonderfully charming vintage brooch for the woman with distinct taste, or perhaps for the avid bird lover...
