A wonderful antique emu brooch from the Australian Federation era, c1901! This charming brooch is crafted in 9ct gold. The gold colour is a warm rose hue with yellow hint - likely yellow gilded originally and over time worn back to reveal a lovely rose hue (adding further depth to the design!). The hollow brooch depicts a full bodied emu which comes to life in 3 dimensional textured repousse detail. The repousse detail and texture creates the appearance of shaggy feathers to the body, along with an eye, pointed beak, slender legs and feet. The emu rests on a shaped bar which features a shorter scroll like profile overlapped from behind the emu. To the back of the piece is a secure metal pin and 'C' connection. There is a "9CT" stamp also to the reverse of brooch.
Patriotic jewellery was made to commemorate the Federation of Australia formed on 1st January 1901, also known as the Commonwealth of Australia. Many stick pins, brooches and pendants were made to commemorate this event.
A wonderful piece of Australian history, perhaps to add to a collection or as a gift to the avid Australia lover!
