  • Description

A sweet pair of Scottish malachite butterfly earrings from the Victorian era, c1860! Crafted in sterling silver the pair depicts a pair of butterflies accented with malachite segments in the wings. The malachite stones display textured bands and a marble look of vivid green hue's - artfully portraying real butterfly wings! The surface of the silver surrounding the malachite stones have ornate hand-etching which add further texture and character to the butterflies. There is a ridged abdomen along with high polished head and eyes, little antenna's to the top curve over to meet the wings. The butterflies sway gracefully from the lobe, suspended from a silver bead topper and finished with a simple earring wire. The polished backs have no visible stamps which is typical of Scottish Victorian pebble jewellery, however tests indicate sterling silver.

The butterfly is known for their beauty and delicacy and was a popular insect motif in 19th century jewellery, often symbolizing the soul in a natural course of action; From the natural aspect, its meaning stems from the three stages of the butterfly existence; the caterpillar, the chrysalis, and the butterfly. Inherently, this is the cycle of the soul through the span of human growth and passing ...fluttering off to the heavens.

A divine pair of butterfly Victorian earrings from bonnie Scotland. Perfect for the butterfly admirer, or the avid Scottish pebble jewellery collector!
