A lovely antique Vulcanite bracelet from the Victorian era, c1880! This statement antique bracelet consists of numerous smooth torpedo shaped sections of vulcanite, all newly hand strung onto a double black elastic cord to fit most wrist sizes.
As well as being lightweight, the vulcanite bracelet has a lustrous surface shine, combined with a warm and smooth texture against the skin - the hue is off black (very subtle brown), indicative of vulcanite over time. The vulcanite panels measure 3.50cm - 4.00cm in width.

The antique bracelet was made during the Victorian period particularly after the death of Prince Albert in 1861, when wearing black mourning jewellery was all the rage in England, and beyond. Vulcanite is essentially a vulcanized rubber created by heating sap of the Euphorbia or Ficus trees from Malaysia with sulphur. It was discovered in the early 1840's, and vulcanite was patented by Charles Goodyear in 1846. Vulcanite items can be highly polished black when manufactured but overtime the colour fades to a dark brown and is accelerated if the vulcanite is continually exposed to strong light.
Today, this antique bracelet remains a fabulous statement piece and is a wonderful example of 19th century mourning jewellery!
