An ornate pair of English love heart dishes from the Art Nouveau era, c1897! Made of sterling silver, the beautiful pair of heart shaped dishes feature pierced lattice work sides with embossed ribbons, flowers and scrolls. Conveying a romantic theme, a solid heart shaped base holds trinkets, or special keepsakes. In the day they were likely as nut or lolly dishes (aka, bon bon dishes). Both bear a set of Birmingham hallmarks near the rim, dating the pair to year 1897, there is also the makers marks "HM" which is that of notable Birmingham silversmith, Henry Matthews. Henry Matthews is known for his small silver items which featured attention to detail, he stopped production in 1930.
