A lovingly loved antique locket from the Victorian era, mid to late 19th century! Made of gold filled, this oval shaped locket opens to reveal a hand-tinted albumen or salt print portrait of a handsome gentleman resting behind a bevel glass cover, with engine turned frame. The front and back panels are decorated with guilloche engraving, with the front panel featuring a hand engraved buckle (in Order of the Garter style) and central shield motif... the engraving has subtle fading with the passage of time. The unique watch style push-button mechanism works well with a click when fastened - the design was very popular from late Georgian era and was often attached on a long guard chain and tucked into the waist, worn either by a woman or man.
The locket measures 4cm in height including the top ring, and 2.50cm wide.
Perfect for any antique photo locket enthusiast!
