A wonderful vintage opal ring dating to the late Arts & Crafts era, c1930! A handmade ring of sterling silver, the ring features a large Australian opal doublet which is prominently blue in colour. The opal itself does bear some visual signs of loving wear and tear which is typical of early opal doublet material due to the composite structure. However, the opal retains a magical play of colour with intense flashes of pinkish red, orange, green and yellow which dance in the daylight beautifully. The design of the ring is reminiscent of the prolific Australian jewellery designer, Rhoda Wager (1921-1946), and the style can be attributed to her. The intricate hand wrought gumnuts and leaf shoulder embellishments ooze Australiana elements as well as the wonderful Arts & Crafts detail. Adding further design is a coiled wire wrapping around the bezel setting and flowing behind and around the lower leaf motifs. A smooth and high-dome shank makes up the rest of the ring. No stamps are sighted to the ring, tests indicate sterling silver. The ring retains a natural darkened patina to the silver surface, this can be polished if desired. As the opal is a doublet it will need to be kept away from water to reduce further damage.
