A wonderful antique mourning brooch dating back to Victorian period, circa 1860- 1880's. The vulcanite subject is a slender hand and lace cuff holding a berry bouquet, and a rose wreath below. The reverse has the original brass-colour pin and c-clasp in perfect working order.
This elegant brooch was likely worn to show sorrow of a loved one's passing in Victorian times. In the Victorian language of flowers, the roses represent love and berries sorrow. The beautiful detailed brooch is made from vulcanite - a type of vulcanized rubber which appears black to khaki-brown in colour.
A lovely victorian brooch, perhaps one for the avid vulcanite collector or a nice heartwarming way to connect to the Victorian era.
