A charming RAAF Sweetheart brooch from World War 11 era, c1939 - 1945. The vintage brooch is made of sterling silver and is accented with sparkling marcasite gems. The brooch reflects the Royal Australian Air force design - a circle with the letters 'RAAF' (Royal Australian Air Force) the Imperial Crown to the top, and the wings of a Wedge-Tailed Eagle in flight. The wings have a lovely 3 dimensional design and are lined with marcasite gems along with beading and milgrain detail.
The tradition of sending mementos home to loved ones from the war front begun during World War 1 and intensified during World War 11. These young servicemen initiated the tradition of sending “sweetheart” jewellery back home to their girlfriends, wives, sisters and mothers. The women who received these jewellery pieces wore them with pride. It let them feel connected to their loved ones on the other side of the world and also show their patriotism.
Stamped 'STG SIL' to the reverse denoting sterling silver, there is also hand-engraved numerals '4287 1/2' perhaps the serial number.
A wonderful piece of memorabilia from the World War 11 era, and a great little addition to any sweetheart collection!
