An impressionable Victorian brooch dating back to late 1800's. A statement piece which would easily compliment with today's styles! The lovely banded malachite stone is inlaid into three sections along crescent. A light and dark banding to malachite along with a waxy like lustre bestows a striking appearance. Attached along bottom and dangling freely are five graduated tear-shaped malachite pendants. The second pendant in looks to have been replaced by another green stone- it is not matched in green hue. No stamps are evident to this piece, however test indicates sterling silver. Much of this pebble jewelry was unsigned. Pin and 'C' clasp on the reverse.
The brooch is often referred to as "Scottish Pebble" - a style of jewellery popular during the reign of Queen Victoria. She became enchanted with anything Scottish and a fad was born. Around circa 1870, there was a penchant for malachite set "Scottish" jewels and the banded green stone had to be imported from Siberia for the purpose (info via Lang Jewelry University).
A gorgeous antique piece which will delight any malachite lover...
