This charming mourning pendant dates back to Victorian era- circa 1880. The large oval shaped pendant is fashioned from black onyx and features an applique at the front - detailed in a lovely 'forget-me-not' symbolic motif. The motif is further adorned with natural seed pearls - 24 pearls in total. The forget-me-not symbol represents remembrance & true love; the pearls represent tears and the black background represents a period of mourning.
Both the large bail, cap and applique has tested to at least 18ct gold.
The reverse of pendant is missing the frame and inserts. In the day, there would have been perhaps a lock of hair from a deceased loved one, or perhaps a photo. Today, this can be left as is, or a photo of your choice fixed into place on the reverse. The missing frame and inserts is reflected the price.
Besides the frame and inserts missing on the reverse this mourning treasure is in beautiful antique condition with no chips to onyx, nor any pearl missing.
