A delightful christening mug from the mid-Victorian era, c1874! The mug is made of sterling silver and comes in a blue silk and velvet lined leatherette case. The mug features beautiful ornate repousse workmanship of floral and foliage motifs to two of the four bordered sections. There is further repousse work along the lower section of mug of acanthus leaves and applied wirework near the rim of cup. The handle is quite decorative with beading along sides and top, textured foliage (likely acanthus leaves!) and what appears to be a mythical serpent head. A rimmed circular foot completes the mug.

The mug bears a full set of English hallmarks near the rim. Stamped with the 'lion passant' denoting the silver fineness, 'anchor' denoting Birmingham origin and "Z" denoting the year 1874. A Queen Victoria duty mark can also be seen, as well the stamp for maker Hilliard Thomason "H & T".

A regal sterling silver mug steeped with endearing history...
