An antique match safe from the Edwardian era, c1910! Made in England, Birmingham and crafted in sterling silver the match safe (aka vesta case) was once used as a pocket match safe in the early 20th century, it has the match 'striker' placed at the bottom. Today the little work of art can be used for many things such as a unique pendant locket to store small everyday necessities like pills, mints, or herbs .. or small sentimental mementos to keep close to the heart! A long 31" inch silver-plated vintage rope necklace accompanies the case and compliments beautifully in heft and design. The front and back of the piece features ornate hand engraving of flowing foliage and flower design, typical of the graceful Art Nouveau aesthetic. One side of the piece has a monogrammed scroll cartouche which is engraved with initials 'EL'. The hinged lid is correctly aligned and opens and shuts well with a small notch near the side opening. There is a soldered ring and robust sterling silver jump ring to the side of the case, and where the chain slides through nicely.

The set of hallmarks placed along the opening rim indicate the origin of the vesta case to be England, Birmingham, and was crafted in 1910 (110 years old!). The maker's initials "J.G LTD" is that of Joseph Gloster Ltd of once Hockley Hill, Birmingham.

A charming work of art in itself and today would make a unique and practical pendant locket.

*Storage size: Three extra-large herbal pills can fit inside the case.
