This vesta case was used back in the late 1800's as a pocket match safe, it has a match 'striker' placed at the bottom. The front and back of this vesta case features beautiful hand-engraved patterns; one side is flourished with Ivy Leaves and the opposite side is engraved with ornate swirls surrounding an un-monogrammed shield cartouche ..... (where your initials beckons!) The hinge is strong, the lid correctly aligned and opens and shuts very firmly. There is a tiny ding on the shield but nothing to detract.
The size is smaller compared to most of the vesta's, it measures 1 1/5 height x 1 1/0 wide
A beautiful work of art in itself and today could used for practicality, such as a pill box, small keepsake case ...or keeping your matches dry for camping/hiking.
