A lovely, well preserved sweetheart locket dating back to World War 11, 1939-1945. The copper-tone with blue and red enamel badge to the front depicts the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force)
The tradition of sending mementos home to loved ones from the war front begun during World War 1 and intensified during World War 11. These young servicemen initiated the tradition of sending “sweetheart” jewellery back home to their girlfriends, wives, sisters and mothers. The women who received these jewellery pieces wore them with pride. It let them feel connected to their loved ones on the other side of the world and also show their patriotism.
The 9ct yellow gold lined locket opens up to two separate sections. Original jump ring is attached on top. The chain pictured is not included
