A lovely antique engraved locket from the Victorian era, c1890! Made of sterling silver the charming oval locket features a stylized tab applique running from the top, along with an all-over hand engraved pattern to the front panel of the locket. The back side is smooth and plain. An oval jump attaches from the top of the locket and is suspended from a large spring-loaded 'O' ring (aka bolt ring) which appears to be original. The clasp adds great versatility for wearing options, and was likely attached to a book chain in the late 19th century (strongly suggestive by the wonderful tintype resting within the locket!). Opening the locket reveals two delightful tintype photographs of two women, one appears to be an older lady with an impeccable Victorian hairdo and the other appears more youthful... likely a mother and daughter combo!? The mother has a rather stern look, glancing toward the daughter, whilst the daughter appears to have an innocent mien. Also, and at closer examination, the daughter appears to be wearing this locket in the photograph … giving the locket a beautiful aura of yesteryear! Furthermore, you will see at closer inspection both ladies are bedecked with a high-neck brooch and little hoop style earrings adorn the daughter's lobes. So endearing!
The locket bears three identical stamps to the reverse which are difficult to decipher, though appear to read initials "S.C" (likely the maker). No sterling guarantee marks are evident however tests indicate sterling silver locket and clasp. The locket comes with a complementary black leather cord necklace, seen pictured on the model.
A charming 19th century locket with two enchanting tintype images. The beautiful design would easily suit with today's fashion!
