It doesn't get more Australian than this! Here is a wonderful piece of Australian history dating to Australia's post Federation period, circa 1903! Made of 9ct rosy yellow gold, the petite map of Australia started it's life as a stick pin and has been converted into a lovely pendant. The map of Australia suspends from the original 9ct trace chain, and is beautifully detailed with hand engraved lines denoting state borders, and includes rivers and what appears to be little fish. There is something else which I might add (if you haven't already observed?) there is no border between the states of South Australia and Northern Territory, as well Victoria and New South Wales. This is because NT was once part of SA up until 1911, and VIC was once part of NSW! Also it appears the island state of Tasmania has been forgotten about (once again!).
A set of early Australian stamps are seen to the reverse; '9C', a 'wheat' symbol and a 'bee' symbol. The bee symbol was that of long standing jewelley firm A. Benjamin and Son Pty of Melbourne, Victoria (c1880 - continues to trade in Melbourne under Benjamin & Co). There is also Registration mark (seldomly sighted on early Australian pieces) - "REGD.4.2.03" denoting that the piece was a registered design.
The small Map of Australia measures approximately 15mm x 15mm and chain length is 3cm. It can easily be converted into a charm, if you desire.
Patriotic jewellery was made to commemorate Australia's Federation period, formed on 1st January 1901. Many stick pins, brooches and pendants were made to mark this special event.
A charming piece of Australian history, perhaps to add to a collection, or as a gift to the homesick abroad... or avid Australia lover!
