A distinct early Australian Federation brooch, from the early 20th century, c1901! Made of 9ct gold the colour is a warm yellow hue with rose gold hints where the yellow gilding has gently rubbed, or been grooved into. The unusual design depicts a map of Australia with an oval wreath like surround. The wreath consists of six leaf (perhaps ivy) motifs, alternating with six garnet topped doublet stones. The vivid blue doublet stones, which imitate sapphires, rest in claw settings, and the leaf motifs feature lovely engraved accents (portraying leaf veins beautifully!).

The map of Australia is hand engraved with 'AUSTRALIA' as well as lines denoting state borders, and includes stars and rivers. There is something else which I might add (if you haven't already observed?) there is no border between the states of South Australia and Northern Territory, as well, Victoria and New South Wales. This is because NT was once part of SA up until 1911, and VIC was once part of NSW! Also it appears the island state of Tasmania has been forgotten about (once again!).

A pin and 'C' loop attaches to the back and a later gold plated safety chain/pin connects for added security whilst wearing. Stamped "9CT" to the back, denoting 9ct gold.

The distinct brooch is steeped with oodles of Australian history; Patriotic jewellery was made to commemorate the Federation of Australia (also known as the Commonwealth of Australia) that was formed on January the 1st, year 1901. Many stick pins, brooches and pendants were made to commemorate this special event, and again during and after WW1.

A wonderful one-of-a-kind brooch for the avid Australian antique jewellery collector. It would also make a perfect Aussie token for the traveler or a gift for the homesick working abroad!
