A striking vintage paua shell necklace from the mid 20th century! Made of sterling silver, the necklace features shimmering paua shell, also known as abalone shell, the shell features at the front of the necklace and is inlaid to five separate sections. The shell displays a rich exotic colour-play of greens, blue and violet which glisten from varying angles. The five paua shell sections to the front of the necklace include two diamond profiles, two elongated oval profiles, and a pendulum shape which suspends from the centre. The gorgeous stylized design reminiscent of Art Deco style. An original sterling trace chain with bolt ring clasp makes up the rest of the necklace.
Total length of the necklace measures 17"+ (44cm), and front pendulum pendant is 1 & 1/2" (4cm).
The paua shell became popular with craft jewellers in the 1950's through to the 1970's with most set into sterling silver jewellery. It found popularity with the new-age spiritualist crowd which believed the shell can enhance feelings of peace, compassion and love. It also offered connections to the indigenous cultures of New Zealand, and is sometimes referred to as sea opal due to the blue and green colours.
A wonderful vintage necklace, perfect layered with others, or just as nice alone on the neckline!
