A wonderful antique opal bangle dating back to late Victorian, early Edwardian era, c1900-1910! The elegant design boasts a good-sized solid white Australian opal which is fashioned in a unique kite-shape. The opal measures 24mm x 21.80mm, estimated weight is 11.50 carats and is predominantly whitish grey with subtle pinfire twinkles.
Opal is secured in a bezel setting, it is flanked by a knife-edge split shoulder design, and decorated with grooved loops across each end of shoulder. An elegant 2mm wide knife-edge back half makes up the rest of bangle. There are no stamps evident on bangle, it has been xrf tested to 12ct gold. The gold is a charming antique matte and appears to be a yellow wash over rose gold. Integrated tongue clasp fastens bangle, and a safety chain is connected for extra security. The connection where tongue extends into may have been repaired or altered at some stage over the years- it does not close with a click, but slides inward firmly.
Bangle is in very good condition considering age. The opal does have slight crazing to top -not uncommon for the 100+ year age. The crazing is difficult to see to the unaided eye, it is seen under magnification, along with small natural cracks at the back of opal.
A perfect gift to a loved one or perhaps for the lady born in October! A timeless and wonderful antique bangle.
