A regal opal antique brooch from the late Victorian era, c1900! Made by the iconic Willis & Co manufacturing jewellers of Melbourne, Australia, the brooch is made of 9ct gold - a lovely warm rose gold with yellow gold highlights. Interspaced along the centre of the brooch is three solid Australian opals. The almost round cabochon shaped opals have a nice translucency with a subtle iridescent greenish blue play of colour. Each opal rests in a multi-claw gallery style setting and sit atop a double bar which form into handsome scrolls at each end. There is a yellow gold hand-etched strip resting either side of the opal, contrasting beautifully with the rose gold, and adding extra flair to the brooch!
A metal pin and c-loop to the reverse make up the rest of the brooch. There is early Australian stamps to the brooch - a 'sheaf' (denoting 9ct gold), '9' and 'unicorn' stamp - derived from the family crest of T Willis and Co, a prominent jeweller in Melbourne, Victoria in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
An attractive antique brooch. A gorgeous little accessory for the high neck collar, jacket lapel, or scarf!
