A wonderful antique onyx cameo ring from the late Victorian era, c1900! The ring is crafted in 9ct gold and the colour is a gentle rose hue indicative of antique gold. The ring features an oval cameo at the centre which is carved from a black and white onyx stone, also known as agate. Hardstone cameos (such as this agate) are more difficult to carve than the shell cameos which are softer, therefore the hardstone requires more skillful craftsmanship. The lovely cameo carving depicts a Roman man portrait facing left. The portrait is carved into the white band of the agate, resting above a layer of black agate... displaying a striking contrast! A simple six claw setting holds the cameo in place. A fine 1.70mm wide band narrowing into forged pointed shoulders makes up the rest of the ring. The cameo measures 11.00mm x 8.40mm and the height from the finger is 4.00mm (relatively low).
Finger size measures L & 1/2 (Aus) 6 & 1/4 (USA).
A wonderful example of early hardstone cameo jewellery. Perhaps for the cameo admirer - suitable for a lady or man!
