A charming locket dating back to Victorian era- circa 1880. This sterling silver locket once had a gold gilding, which over the 130 years is not so evident due to wear (and a light polish!). The remnants of the gold gilding has been left behind in the surrounding patterned grooves... adding intrigue to this delightful locket . To the back of locket bears English hallmarks; Birmingham origin, dated 1884 (letter k), and makers mark is difficult to decipher due to wear.
The locket reflect's the British aesthetic movement inspired by Japanese art. An oval subject depicts a bird, possibly a swallow, in flight and soaring above foliage - there appears to be two birds in flight behind subject as well. Surrounding is a detailed grooved/indented, beaded, rectangular & oval pattern which features to both front and back.
The locket opens easily via a groove to side, inside reveals the original frame, however inserts (plastic and paper) have been added at a later date.
Included and attached to locket is a more recent Sterling Silver 45cm/18" box necklace.
