A beautiful gold locket necklace from the late Victorian era, c1900! The distinct rectangle-shaped locket and antique chain is made of 15ct gold, a charming antique yellow gilding over rose (typical of the era), complementing each other beautifully! A magnificent hand engraved pattern adorns the front of the locket, and accented in the centre is one dazzling old-cut diamond (approx 0.05-carat) which rests centrally in a beaded deeply chased eight-pointed star. The very ornate hand-engraving includes foliage, scrolls, flowers and fancy 'dotted' borders - the workmanship is to the highest level. Inside the locket reveals the original copper-tone frame insert and original backing paper ... and where your special photo or small keepsake beckons!
The locket suspends from a 15ct gold smooth and solid trace/bead design necklace measuring 23" inches. The necklace likely started it's life in the late 19th century as a single extra long guard chain, and over the years has been shortened into a double 'layered' alike chain which accommodates the locket nicely. A gold swivel clasp and jump ring to the end connects the chain together, the swivel clasp indicated 9ct gold when tested and the necklace tested 15ct gold.
The locket bears English hallmarks to the reverse - Chester origin and dated year 1900 indicated by the letter stamp "R". Makers marks "M & V".
A gorgeous antique locket necklace in a unique eye catching design. Perfect for night or day wear, and ideal to store those special photos or small keepsakes!
